My Colorado Travel Guide

“The Rocky Mountains realize – nay, exceed – the dream of my childhood. It is magnificent, and the air is life-giving.”

- Isabella Bird

When winter descends on Colorado, the state transforms into a veritable paradise for skiers, snowboarders, and winter enthusiasts. With its breathtaking mountain ranges, abundant snow, and vibrant après-ski culture, Colorado has long been the destination of choice for my family when it comes to skiing. Though it does help to have family who live in Denver.

I am beyond excited to share with you my Guide to Colorado during the Winter months. I grew up spending Summer and Winter in Colorado visiting family and I’m confident the recommendations in this guide will have you falling in love with Colorado too.

WHEN to GO

A top destination for anyone seeking adventure in the snow, whether you’re a seasonal skier or a newbie, the ski resorts here offer something for everyone – from thrilling slopes to cozy cabins and scenic views that look like they were pulled from a postcard. Peak season is from February and March which will bring larger crowds with prices at their highest. Spring skiing occurs between late March and April and is an ideal time if you want to miss the crowds and save some money.

SKI RESORTS

ASPEN

Famous for its world-class ski resorts, Aspen is a winter wonderland that attracts snow enthusiasts from all over. Downtown Aspen is a blend of luxury boutiques, local eateries, and historic landmarks.

BRECKENRIDGE

Dreaming of a place where alpine beauty meets a lively town spirit? Breckenridge should be at the top of your list! Often called “Breck” by the locals, this town is a year-round mountain paradise, but in the winter – it has that cozy mountain town vibe that makes you want to sip hot coca by the fireplace.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Ah, Steamboat Springs! This isn’t your typical ski town. Sure, it’s got world-class slopes that snow enthusiasts rave about, but there’s a whole other side to this place that’s just waiting to be explored. Steamboat Springs is famous for its natural hot springs as it is for its powdery snow.

VAIL

Outside of Aspen, Vail epitomizes alpine luxury. Known for its pristine ski slopes and shopping, Vail Village awaits guests with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture, you would  think you slipped into a European alpine town.

WHERE to STAY

HOTEL JEROME

Aspen

Built in 1889, Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection has established itself as a luxury landmark. The three-story brick structure, built during the height of the state’s silver boom, emulates the great European hotels of the time.

CRYSTAL PEAK LODGE

Breckenridge

Inspired by the great lodge buildings found throughout the American West, the lodge is in perfect harmony with the area’s natural alpine setting. A beautiful condominium property at the base of Peak 7.

STEAMBOAT GRAND

Steamboat Springs

The Steamboat Grand brings a new level of service to one of America’s favorite year-round ski resorts. Surround yourself in casual elegance and enjoy all of the amenities that the Grand has to offer!

THE HYTHE

Vail

The Hythe celebrates the town’s rich history and grants a longed-for opportunity to venture forth from the world of common day into a sophisticated haven rich with joy-filled celebration and the boundless rewards of shared good times.

WHERE to EAT

WHITE HOUSE TAVERN

Aspen

Located in an old house from 1883, with a warm décor and great art, this gastropub has an extensive cocktail and wine list plus great burgers, sandwiches, and excellent salads at reasonable prices.

ARUM

Breckenridge

White oak furnishings and sleek, carmel-colored banquettes create a contemporary ski-lodge vibe. Order the four-course tasing menu or opt for crowd-pleasing dishes like curry-coated cauliflower.

PERIODIC TABLE

Steamboat Springs

Not “bound” to a single style or cuisine, the Periodic Table explores the great dining periods and locales of the world. This transformative dining experience entirely reinvents itself each Winter and Summer season, pairing exciting thematic destinations with fresh, local and season ingredients.

ROOT & FLOWER

Vail

Savor braised pork cheeks and duck fat potatoes (alongside an impressive cocktail program) while lounging on their blue leather banquettes.

THINGS to DO & SEE

Aspen

You can ski right into downtown from Aspen Mountain (known locally as “Ajax”) which has 64 miles and 3,267 vertical feet of terrain. Sprawling Snowmass offers tons of family-friendly runs and amenities. Aspen Highlands is known for its steep, rugged terrain, while Buttermilk has a world-class terrain park.

Breckenridge

When you’re not skiing, I’d recommend taking a stroll down Main Street where you’ll find all the trendy restaurants and niche boutiques. If history piques your interest, the Breckenridge History offers tours with themes like mining industry or the bawdy legacy of the town’s old saloons.

Steamboat Springs

Let a local fishing guide lead you to the best ice fishing spots in the Yampa Valley or discover Steamboat Springs the way the cowboys did with single-day horseback trail rides.

Vail

A snowcat adventure is a thrill for experienced skiers and snowboarders ranging from intermediate to advanced. Hire Vail Powder Guide’s snowcat with a group of your best friends to explore Vail’s glorious backcountry. Pup lovers will forever remember a dog-sledding excursion over powder-covered trails. With Alpine Adventures Dogsledding, you can pile on a sled that winds through private paths lined with aspen and pines.
