My Alaska Travel Guide

“Get lost in the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness.”

- Unknown

Alaska. The last Fronter. Known for its vast wilderness, towering mountains, and wildlife. My favorite season to visit is during the winter months, when the state transforms into a magical winter wonderland. Whether you’re an avid adventurer, a lover of serene landscapes, or someone who simply wants to escape, Alaska in the winter offers something for everyone.

I am beyond excited to share with you my Guide to Alaska, specifically the Anchorage and surrounding areas. I’m confident the recommendations in this guide will have you falling in love with Alaska too.

WHEN to GO

Most people who visit Alaska in any given year visit during the summer months, but Alaska is actually a year-round destination. Yes, it’s colder and darker in the winter, but there are several reasons to visit during Alaska’s winter months.

WHERE to STAY

ALYESKA RESORT

Girdwood

After a long day of outdoor adventures, there’s nothing better than retreating to a cozy Alaskan resort. Alyeska Resort is Alaska’s premier year-round destination featuring over 300-rooms, many fine dining experiences, a saltwater pool, ski mountain and the new Nordic spa.

ARCTIC IGLOO RESORT

Fairbanks

This glass-roofed Arctic Igloo Resort offers their guests luxury in the wilderness: a view of the rugged landscape and the starry northern sky, high-quality accommodations, and personalized heartfelt service.

CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT

Fairbanks

The resort is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks and is one of the most accessible hot springs in the state. The resort includes a campground, cabins and rooms to rent, a restaurant, tours of all kinds and an indoor museum fashioned from 1,000 tons of ice.

HOTEL CAPTAIN COOK

Anchorage

Located in the heart of downtown Anchorage, Hotel Captain Cook with 557 finely appointed rooms, including 94 suites, is the perfect basecamp for adventure.

WHERE to EAT

KALADI BROTHERS COFFEE

Coffee

What began as an espresso cart on Anchorage’s 4th Avenue in the spring of 1986, is now Alaska’s premier coffee roaster. Kaladi Brothers Coffee is made in Alaska, by Alaskans.

FIRE ISLAND BAKESHOP

Bakery

Located in Anchorage, everything in this bakery is handmade and delicious. My sister took me here the first time I visited and I was hooked ever since! You’ve got to try their maple-bourbon shortbread cookies (they sell out fast!) or grab a ham cheddar chive scone for the road.

SEVEN GLACIERS

Seafood

Perched in the majestic Chugach mountains, Seven Glaciers offers an enchanting culinary experience with breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. The name Seven Glaciers pays tribute to the seven glaciers that can be seen from the restaurant: Crow Glacier, Raven Glacier, Eagle Glacier, Clear Glacier, Milk Glacier and Alyeska Glacier.

WHISKEY & RAMEN

Asian

The three-level, Japanese izakaya-styled restaurant and whiskey bar, serves a variety of ramen dishes and elevated small plates. Reservations fill up fast and there’s usually a wait for walk-ins, but trust me – that 30 minute wait will be worth it.

RUSTIC GOAT

Local Fare

Enter the industrial-chic restaurant with floor to ceiling windows of the surrounding landscape and indulge in the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Not sure what to get? Try the Drunken Clams & Sausage. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

THINGS to DO & SEE

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

These colorful ribbons of light are best seen in the darkest, clearest skies. The best months to witness the Aurora are from late September to April, with peak viewing conditions often occurring between 11:00 P.M. and 2:00 A.M.

Fairbanks, located just below the Arctic Circle, is considered one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights.

Hop on board the Aurora Winter Train to view the Aurora from the comforts of a cozy train car with a panoramic roof.

SKIING & SNOWBOARDING

Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a beginner, there are plenty of opportunities to hit the slopes in places like Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. The mountains in Alaska offer long runs, deep power, and less crowded experience compared to make ski destinations in the lower 48.

DOG SLEDDING

Girdwood, Anchorage, and Denali National Park all offer dog sledding tours, which give you a firsthand glimpse into the state’s rich history of this iconic mode of transportation.

SNOWMOBILING

For those looking for more adrenaline-pumping adventure, snowmobiling through the Alaskan wilderness offers a unique way to explore vast, unspoiled terrain. Popular areas of snowmobiling include the Kenai Peninsula and Hatcher Pass, both known for their scenic beauty and excellent trails.

GLACIER TOUR

Matanuska Glacier

The Matanuska Glacier is located two hours northeast of Anchorage and is Alaska’s most accessible glacier. With an experienced local guide, walk on the amazing blue ice of this massive glacier.

WINTER CRUISE

Whittier

Set within the jaw-dropping scenery of the Chugach mountains on the grounds of Alyeska Resort, Alaska’s newest Nordic spa awaits. This unique spa experience invites you to enjoy the benefits of hydrotherapy as you take some time to disconnect-to reconnect.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR WINTER TRAVEL

  1. Dress in Layers: The weather in Alaska can change rapidly, especially in winter. Always dress in layers and make sure to wear moisture-wicking clothes to stay warm and dry.

  2. Rent an SUV: Many roads are well-maintained, but winter conditions can make travel tricky. Renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle with snow tires will ensure you can safely navigate the icy roads.

  3. Check the Weather: If you’re traveling into the mountains or take a day trip to one of the neighboring cities, keep an eye on the weather forecast, as conditions can change quickly.

  4. Plan for Limited Daylight: During the heart of winter, Alaska experiences very short days, particularly in the northern regions. Plan outdoor activities during daylight hours.
